We welcome you from the weekend but this new week has began on a very sad note. We join in grief the parents, guardians, brothers and sisters of the 10 students from St Bernard Secondary School, Manya located in Rakai district who are confirmed dead following a fire that gutted one of the dormitories accommodating over 50 students
According to a statement from an eye witness, the fire whose cause is yet to be known is said to have began around the wee hours of Monday morning as the students were sleeping while locked up in the dormitory
The eyewitness further said that the door to the dormitory was broken by use of an axe. Over 20 students were saved where as those with injuries were rushed to Manya Health Centre, Kalisizo Hospital and Masaka Regional Hospital but unfortunately the fire robbed the 10 students of their dear lives
Students’ belongings like mattresses, suit cases, clothes and books among other scholastic materials were also not spared by the fire.
Police is already at the scene following this tragic incident and the investigations have already kicked off. So far, three students from the same school who are believed to have a connection to the fire have been arrested and are to face thorough interrogation
We take this platform to say rest in peace to the 10 students’ souls
