Last years’ Uganda Entertainment Awards just like the one before that in 2015 were marred in controversy as some award categories and their winners were questioned with some sections of media questioning their legitimacy. However, the Awards seems to be bouncing back every year with a bang.
Last year it received a massive boost when businessman and philanthropist Jackson Pemba injected about 150Million into organising it. And indeed things went on well at least on the side of the organisers. This year yet again, the awards have received some much needed boost from sponsors in the shape of Vision Group who contributed 100Million as Pemba is embroiled in cases of money laundering and fraud. He is in no mood to throw money around this time as he battles security and other government agencies.
During the official launch of the awards last Friday at Kampala Serena Hotel Poolside, Kabs Haloha the C.E.O of Haloha Architects, the organisers of the awards said this year’s winners will walk away with cash reward of 2million shillings each. He was however quick to add that it will only be for a few selected categories.
“Our theme this year is; Dance to The Beat. We want to shake up things in the entertainment field. And under our theme, we will be celebrating East African dances and beats. For a long time the two things have been at the bottom of the arts ladder. Our goal is to elevate them.” Haloha said.
During the same event, the hosts of the awards ceremony that will take place on September 9, at Kampala Serena Hotel were also unveiled. They are Malaika Nnanzi, and DJs Roja and Slick Stuart The evening will see several entertainers awarded in 39 different categories.
The organisers say, there will also be a conference held on July 19 where they will be addressing problems faced by artistes in Uganda with panellists from continental music channels like Trace TV and Sound City contributing in the discussions.
