Just when most people thought Dennis Onyango’s luck had run out after helping Uganda qualify for the African cup of Nations after 38 years of waiting, the Uganda Cranes number first choice goal keeper proved much more than luck when he helped his club achieve perhaps the best silverware in their history.
Denis Onyango has been key this entire season and it’s because of his form that his club Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa was able to win their first ever CAF champions league trophy.
Despite losing to Egyptian side Zamalek 1-0, Mamelodi Sundowns FC was victorious over two legs having secured a 3-0 first leg win a week ago.
Onyango was withdrawn in the early minutes of the final champions league game because of injury but his penalty save in the semi finals was so crucial and historical for the club.
The two-time nominee in the prestigious CAF footballer of the year and African player of the year has become the first Ugandan ever to win the CAF Champions League. Not only that, he has also joined the list of great footballers in the history of Sundowns after the achievement.
