Ugandans are known for embracing new things. This is no longer a secret especially as concerns entertainment and leisure. Ugandans also love to party and have fan.
This perhaps explains the ever changing trends in the entertainment scene that is giving organizers of events and people in the hospitality business, sleepless nights. Those who can’t keep up with the pace, fall off. From goat races to Dog shows and Poetry sessions to now Blankets & Wines. The new phenomenon taking over the entertainment and social scene in Uganda.
According to organizers, “Blankets & Wine is East Africa’s premier music experience designed to showcase outstanding musicians in the emerging genres of Afro-based music”
When a new idea crops up from somewhere and is to do with ‘opening up a new joint’ or starting a new show, Ugandans will always flock in big numbers to be part of the crowd. There are instances where some socialites have jumped into band wagons of such modern ideologies without understanding the basics only to blunder at crucial movements either by misfiring dress codes, or turning up too late.
Blankets and wines which started a few years back, is in its seventh season and the concept revolves around a fan filled outdoor picnic setting where revelers turn up to enjoy good wine, socialize, per take of some snacks and enjoy some form of entertainment usually live Band performances.
Last Sunday was season seven at the Uganda Museum in Kitante in Kampala and if the numbers of the crowd that turned out is to go by, it shows this is seriously becoming something Ugandans are fast warmly embracing. The number of socialites and local celebrities who showed up at the event clearly shows this is something to look up to on the entertainment calendar in future.
They turned up in big numbers carrying picnic baskets, fashionable mats and of course some wine. Donning colorful light clothes, larger-than-life shades with loud make-up. Some of the socialites on show included Judith Heard who came with her kids and ‘battalion’ of thrill seekers enjoying themselves and posing for cameras and who ever cared to see the little excuse of a clothes they adorned.
This being an ‘I was there’ event, there was a lot other local ‘celebs’ who showed face including former big brother house mate Gaetano Jjuko Kaggwa with his colleague Flavia Tumusiime of capital FM. Sylvia Owori was showcasing her designs as well as ‘resurrecting’ The African Woman magazine at a tent.
“I can’t miss any thing as exciting as the Blankets and Wines. This is the thrill moment i always look out for”. Said Walter an ardent fan of the event.
Also spotted in the crowd were NTV’s Sheila Gashumba,Urban TV’s Charlie Denzel Mwiyeretsi, singer Allan Toniks and Basket ball star Isaac Lugudde. Deedan of Radio City was MC whereas Rapper Edwin Ruyonga was on stage alongside, Saxophonist Brian Mugenyi, guitar maestro Charmat Mushanga and ‘Just A Band’ from Kenya providing the live entertainment on stage.
The After-party took place at the tent of the sponsors event Tusker and hosted by House of DJs with comedian Salvador Idringi on the Mic cracking up jokes as the revellers danced the night away.
