Singer cum politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine excited fans at the Swangz Avenue All Star Tour in Masaka after turning up in style. The town was buzzing in anticipation throughout the build-up as the stars from Kampala stormed to celebrate the record label’s 10 years in partnership with Bell Jamz.
So, when the day finally arrived on Saturday 21st July, the locals had to close business early enough to storm Maria Flora Hotel for the big event. As early as 6pm, they turned in droves with some even carrying babies while others went as a family to book the best seats.
As is the custom with the Swangs Avenue All Star tour, the organisers had to first give a chance to the raw talent to show case what they got in a mini talent search which was won by a young lady called Pasha Amora, who beat other contestants hands down with her easy flow of covers she did.
She was smooth, confident and on point with her great voice. A star in the making and also won herself a life time opportunity to perform at the grand finale event featuring Tyrrus Riley on 31st August at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
She also won an all-expenses paid studio recording session courtesy of Bell Jamz and may just turn out to be the next Winnie Nwagi with Swangz Avenue. With the crowd full to capacity at the Maria Flo gardens; it was time for the big stars to take to stage after the local singers from Masaka had warmed up the stage.
Aziz Azion was the first to step on stage as he took the crowd to a musical journey from how it all started 10 years Ago with Swangz as he did ‘Nkumira Omukwano’ and other songs like ‘Oxygen’ that brought him to the limelight. By the time he switched to the latest songs, dancing came to the fore as he performed his new songs done in baxragga style like ‘Am Bad ’ and ‘Omulembe’.
With the crowd now charged up, it was Sheebah’s turn to take it up a notch higher after being introduced by Swangz senior producer Benon Mugumya who had just thanked the Masaka people for turning up in big numbers
Just like Aziz, Sheebah dressed in hot black pants and a little whit top covered with fluffy black jacket, also did almost all her hit songs in a lively performance as the fans cheered her on. She crowned it all with her latest songs ‘Weekend’, Mummy yo’, ‘Muwe’ and ‘Beera Nange’.
By the time Bobi came on stage, the crowd was already charged and despite the limited space, all got up on the feet and danced while Bobi walked on stage with his Firebase crew members waving the national flag to the tunes of ‘Size Yo’. The fans chanted ‘Bobi President’ as he performed those controversial beef songs where he threw jibes at Bobi Wine and the NRM government.
He introduced new lyrics into his songs to pass some of his political messages where he opposes government excesses like the newly introduced OTT (social media) and mobile money taxes. The fans seem to enjoy every bit as they too chanted words of encouragement.
Bobi then invited his colleague Hon. Matthias Mpuuga the equally controversial Masaka Municipality Member of Parliament and his associates from Masaka on stage as they danced together till close to half past one in the night as the fans enjoyed Bell Lager from the sponsors.
