It was a moment of excitement and tears of joy last Friday night the 7th of December as world celebrated Jamaican Ragga and Reggae singer Buju Banton finally walked like a champion out of jail where he has been for the last 10 years.
The singer was convicted in February 2011 of illegal possession of a firearm and conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute after a Drug Enforcement Administration informant provided evidence of Banton brokering a cocaine deal in Florida which got locked in the coolers of McRae Correctional Facility located in Georgia, USA although two years later, a judge threw out the gun charge.
Soon after his release from prison, Banton returned to Jamaica where a throng of fans were waiting to greet him upon his arrival at the countries Norman Manley International Airport.
The Reggae and Dancehall fraternity and fans are at large are on cloud nine following the release of Buju who broke the Bob Marley-held record for most number one singles in Jamaica.
Jamaica’s culture minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange said, “There’s no getting over the fact that he was convicted, but Buju was loved long before he was convicted and he will be loved just the same, even if he comes home in handcuffs.”
According to reports, the ‘Champion’ hot singer headed straight to the recording studio soon after arriving in Jamaica. However, some years back, Banton was universally condemned for his single “Boom Bye Bye,” a track that endorsed killing gay people
From the time the first photos and videos of him out of prison, social media has been on fire with fans passing on their congratulations to Buju for having survived jail which is an equivalent of hell.
One of the fans was American rapper P Diddy who said “Today is a glorious day. Buju is free. Let’s go! King shit. True greatness.”
