The mood was already set when Uganda Cranes registered a respectable one all draw against Ghana in Kumasi over the weekend. The fans were charged up and ready to join in the party.
So by the time the team touched ground in Entebbe on Monday, most fans had secured themselves tickets for the much anticipated tie between the Cranes and Guinea. There were many question marks prior to that all important result the Cranes secured in Ghana after a poor run of results and form in the preliminary stages of the qualifiers and friendly matches.
Fast forward to Wednesday, the tempo was upped when Bebe Cool who was earlier announced as Cranes ambassador by FUFA President Moses Magogo was joined by another star Jose Chameleone to kick the cranes NaMutima fund campaign with Nile Special.
The fans then started trickling to Namboole as early as mid day for a game that kicked off after 7:30 PM. They were singing and chanting clad in their Cranes Jersey while others were drinking in nearby bars in Banda, Kireka and Bweyogere.
And when the speakers blasted Chameleone’s Cranes Namutima song, just before kickoff, the fans went wild. And by the time Geoffrey Massa scored his second goal, the fans were in cloud nine. Not even a power blackout mid match could dampen the mood as fans resorted to using mobile phone to light up the stadium which created a spectacular scene in the darkness.
Although the Cranes did not play at their best, they registered an important victory that sets them on course for qualification to the Africa cup of nations next year. The party which started in the stadium then continued till wee hours of morning.
Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi, Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, the Mufti of Uganda Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje and a host of MPs that included Betty Namboze were cheering the Cranes.
Cranes Ambassador Bebe Cool, his wife Zuena Kirema and Mesach Semakula also joined in cheering as they made an appearance on the pitch during first half break. They took penalty shootouts much to the delight of the frenzied fans at Fortress Namboole where the Cranes are now unbeaten in 10 years.
The party later continued in several night clubs but most notably at Laftaz Comedy Lounge in Centenary Park as other artists like Bebe Cool, with his Gagamel band, Aziz Azion, Akay and the Goodlyfe- Team No Sleep members joined the comedians Dolibondo and Emma in the celebrations
