Ugandans will join the rest of the world in switching attention to Equatorial Guinea to follow soccer action where the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off tonight.
After failing miserably at the last huddle yet again in qualification campaigns, Uganda Cranes fans will be supporting the crème de la crème of Africa albeit begrudgingly as they follow proceedings on Television from West Africa.
Equatorial Guinea will kick off the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, only two months after stepping in as hosts as sixteen teams will be tussling it out for the continent’s ultimate prize.
Original hosts Morocco had asked to postpone the event because of their fears over the spread of the Ebola virus but their plea was rejected by the Confederation of African Football.
The opening match of the 30th edition of the finals will feature the home country against Congo from 16:00 GMT. Three hours later Burkina Faso will meet Gabon in the other Group A match.
This time round there are no clear favourites but a strong contingent from North Africa of Algeria and Tunisia will fight it out against the West African countries Ghana, Ivory Coast Mali and Senegal.
South Africa also has an outside chance of challenging and are considered by many to be the dark horses of this year’s edition while defending champions Nigeria did not make it after being eliminated in qualifiers by DR Congo.
