The Ugandan music scene has grown in leaps and bounds in the past decade or so, with many local artistes now able to stand proudly in communities and introduce themselves as musicians.
This feat has not been achieved easily especially with a predominantly conservative society in Africa which has in the past referred to the profession as a ‘lost cause’ with many of the players condemned as failures in life, ‘Bayaye’ or rogues despite the evident huge raw talents they possessed.
Some few soldiered on as many dropped to pursue the more ‘acceptable professions’ and became teachers, doctors nurses and engineers. However, the former group that gave it a push to the end have since inspired many younger generations that have taken the industry to the next level which is close to professional.
This group of hardworking and talented artistes took the mantle from the likes of Ragga Dee, Shanks Vivi Dee, Fred Ssebatta, Menton Crono etc, include among others Jose Chameleone, Juliana, Bebe Cool, Irene Namubiru and Bobi Wine who happens to make 34 years today.
They pushed the industry to a respectable level where they have built brands and accrued a legion of die hard and adoring fans that keep following them everywhere. In a befitting, birthday farewell party organised by such a group of fans, Bobi Wine the Ghetto president was this morning surprised into tears as his legion of fans also known as the ‘Firebase army’ stormed his mansion in Magere with a brass band and sang him Happy Birthday songs. This is what he had to say;
“I was invaded this morning by the #FireBaseArmy in what would turn out to be the most pleasant surprise. Waking up to trumpets sounding in my compound and voices singing #HappyBirthDay to me was more than I could imagine. Big thanks to my #Valentine Barbie for the thought and to you Fire Base guys,each of you will personally pay for this,I will revenge!
THIS HAS BEEN THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER AND IT’S NOT EVEN STARTED YET. THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE LOVE,I DON’T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED”.
The fans went ahead and cut a cut in honour of their hero and showered him with a bucket of water as they celebrated together in a feast that went on late in the day. Bobi’s wife Barbra Itungo is said to have been part of the organising committee.
Chano8 wishes Bobi Wine a Happy Birthday!
