Former Miss Uganda (2005-2006) Praise Asiimwe Akankwasa is among the six women that have expressed interest in the vacant Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament seat.
The seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal on 22nd March 2018 nullified the election of Winfred Komuhangi Matsiko (NRM) following a petition by FDC’s Betty Muzanira claiming irregularities in the 2016 election.
The light-skinned slender and ambitious Asiimwe who is now in her early 30s also represented the country at the Miss World pageant in China in 2008.
She later put her years of modeling behind her and ventured into a number of jobs. She has since then been silent on the social scene while at the same a few scandals popping up about her.
Hajjati Aisha Lubega, the Electoral Commission Acting Chairperson announced mid this week that nominations will be held from 2nd to 3rd May 2018 at the Rukungiri district headquarters while the by-election is to be held on 31st May 2018.
Asiimwe won Miss Uganda in 2005 against a tight competition of fourteen other girls. During the contest that was held at Little Flowers, Bat Valley, she emerged the winner and was crowned Miss Uganda at the age of 22.
According to the then judges and observers, her success was attributed to her beauty, shapely body and intellect. The ambitious lady did not how ever, end her beauty career at the national level, she went ahead to participate in the 55th Miss World pageant in China in 2008. Asiimwe had intended to work towards being a journalist in life before opting for modeling.
If Praise finally makes it to parliament, she will be another person from the entertainment and showbiz industry to join Ugandan Parliament after singer Bobi wine, comedian Kato Lubwana and Gospel icon Judith Babirye. Here at Chano8, we wish her the best Praise.
