Forty Years Later, Afrigo Band Is Still Going Strong

Afrigo Band last Saturday celebrated forty years in music with pomp and color. There were many lessons that we learnt from the VIP celebrations at took place at Hotel Africana. First and foremost, the celebrated Band still remains Uganda’s unrivalled, most sort after and successful band.

All the attributes that have kept the band alive since 1975 to date were in full display on Saturday, resilience, endurance discipline and organisation as they performed their top hits from the 70’s to the latest to their adoring fans that came from far and wide across East Africa and the rest of the world.

Although the flawless performances were punctuated by rather long speeches and testimonies from ardent fans who spoke of how they got to  know and love Afrigo however, generally this type of audience looked comfortable and did not complain except a few murmurs here and there probably from the younger generation of fans.

Worth noting was a die-hard fan from Tanzanian who had specifically travelled to celebrate the milestone with his stars. He suggested that, Afrigo follows Hugh Masekela (a South African) Jazz artiste’s idea of starting a music academy in Uganda which from the applause that followed, means was a very good idea that can be adopted to keep Afrigo’s legacy and the fire burning for more generations to come.

There were high profile dignitaries too to commemorate the forty years of excellence among them former finance minister Maria Kiwanuka, UPDF Chief of Defense Forces General Edward Katumba Wamala and City Businessman Godfrey Kirumira.

There was plenty to eat and drink as it was a VIP event that later turned into a club of sorts as guests took to the floor to dance to their favourite Afrigo tunes. What was important and clear in the minds of all at the end was that, forty years later, Afrigo is still Uganda’s biggest and most consistent band.

Afrigo Band then concluded by giving awards to companies and individuals who have supported them through the years. Check out the best photos from the concert at Hotel Africana on Saturday 21st November.
