Uganda has had it all the way up in terms of national image and national identity in the last month. While Ugandans were still nursing the hangover of seeing the pope Francis, the Barcelona legends perched upon the pearl. This is another visit that will definitely endorse the nation’s tourism sector, adding on the credit added by pope’s visit two weeks ago. Today Uganda is the 8th most visited country on the African continent.
The legends visit will boost Uganda’s tourism, travel and sports industries and is expected to increase the country’s visibility and build awareness across the globe. According to James Tumusiime, chairman Uganda Tourism Board it means a lot to have the Pope and the legends back to back.
“We are very delighted to have you hot on the heels of the pope” he said.
In line with his statement, Steven Asiimwe, the C.E.O of Uganda Tourism Board invited the legends to come with their families and enjoy Uganda more.
“Come with your families, neighbours and enemies and enjoy the gorillas more. You can even stay forever, because we have enough space and property to accommodate you” he said jestingly.
Tourism is Uganda‘s highest foreign income, contributing approximately 6.5bn shillings to the budget through the 2.8million international travellers ushered in.
The players toured Bwindi impenetrable national park tracking gorillas and then a game drive in Murchison falls National Park. Later, they marvelled at the source of the Nile, before engaging a challenging hike upon Murchison falls and eventually flying back to Kampala. The team was headed by Mr Amos Wekesa, the CEO of Great Lakes safaris with Ambrose Tashobia FUBA chairman making the initial connections.
At today’s press briefing held at Sheraton hotel where the legends were unveiled, the coordinator of the Barcelona team who also represented RG Sports Solutions Rayco Garcia thanked the President and the people of Uganda for being hospitable and grateful for the invitation. They promised to pass the message that Uganda is indeed a beautiful country and the pearl of Africa.
Most of the legends like Edgar Davids, Gianluca Zambrotta, Patrick Kluivert and Gaizka Mendiata Zabala were already in the country by press time with Juliano Belleti, Ludovic Guily and Anderson Luis de Sousa also known as Deco joining in later. The exhibition match against the Uganda Cranes Select team takes place tomorrow at 4:00pm in Namboole stadium.
