Interview: Meet Irena K Who Wants To Be Among The Top 3 Female Singers

Many of you have heard her sing, seen her in music videos and on stage, but today we have decided to bring her to you. She is none other than singer Irena K who is the sister to famous Afrigo Band singer Joanita Kawalya. 

Irene sang at Kabaka of Buganda’s wedding in 1999 and here is what she says about herself;

Chano8: Who is Irena K?

 I am called Irene Kathleen Nambooze aka Irena K, which is my stage name. I was born on  August 12, 1985, so I am 33 years old.

Chano8: What genre of music do you sing?

 I do Zouk, Afrobeat, Afro-pop, Dancehall and band music.

Chano8: How many songs have you recorded so far?

They include ‘Love Butwa’, ‘Koona (a collabo with Ks Alpha), ‘Ekiba Kibe’, ‘Wootoba I Miss You’ and ‘Oli Muka’.

Chano8: Okay, back to music; when exactly did you start singing?

 I started singing way back in high school when I was at Buddo S.S I was among the group which sang during Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi’s wedding in 1999. I was in senior one then. The song was titled ‘Emitima Gya Baganda’.  From there I sang many songs from Buddo S.S. But my first song as Irena K, was released in August 2016. The song is titled ‘Love Butwa’

Chano8: Leaving music alone, are you single?

Let me keep it to myself but just know that I am not searching.

 Chano8: Do you have a family? If so, how do you balance between doing music and family?

 I have a family as anybody else does. I love them all and create time for them when I am not in studio or on stage.

 Chano8: What does love mean to you?

 What I know is that love is a gift from God. I can’t describe what it is but what I know is that I am a human being and I have to be loved.

Chano8: Where do you hope to be five years from now?

In five years!! Hmmmmm I am going to be among the top 3 female artistes in Uganda.

Chano8: Have you met any challenges as a musician?

 Yes. I have met challenges in promoting my music.

Chano8: Tell us about your school life?

No. After my primary school,  I joined Buddo S.S where I did my UCE and UACE. I went to Nkumba University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Office Management and Secretarial Studies.

Chano8: Do you have any advice for upcoming singers?

 Let them believe in themselves because you can get whatever you want if you have hope and believe in yourself. They have to work hard in music industry. Time will come for them to be famous.
