In the wake of the Uganda Communications Commission’s directive to all local telecom companies to stop selling and replacing clients’ lost sim cards, mobile phone owners and those who were planning to own new sim cards are worried
Early last month, UCC ordered the telecom companies to recall all sim cards sold by vendors until they acquire equipment to verify their customer’s identification. The whole reason why UCC did this was like a security measure to cab down the selling of sim cards to unknown people who might negative intentions.
Despite the complaints from the public that it was an unfair thing, no telecom company actually sells sim cards and those who were planning to buy them will have to wait a little longer until UCC allows the companies to sell them again.
As the ban still goes on, even replacing of lost sim cards is not been allowed too. People who lost their phones after the UCC directive are up to now off air but not anymore for MTN customers if a post that is pinned on MTN’s official Facebook page is something we should go by
Although we don’t know the arrangement the other companies like UTL, Africell, Airtel, Vodafone, Smart among others have, those who lost their MTN lines can go replace them but only at the selected service centres named.
“Get your MTN SIM Card replaced by presenting an original National ID (for Ugandans) or a Passport (for foreigners) and a letter from Police stating the loss of your SIM card at any of the following MTN Service centres. Kampala – Shoprite-Clocktower along Ben Kiwanuka street, Shoprite-Lugogo Mall, Mukwano Mall, Kyaggwe Road and Kampala Road, Opposite Bank of Uganda, Mbarara – Plot 5, High Street, Fort Portal – Opposite Mpanga Market, Jinja – Casino building, Lubas Road, Gulu – Plot 15, Nehru Road, Arua – Oradea Complex, Adumi Road, Masindi – Plot 28, Port Road, Opposite Post Office” Read part of MTN’s post.
It seems MTN, bought the equipment to verify their customer’s identification that UCC had demanded. They were proud to announce the good news to their clients and may be even selling of new sim cards will happen soon.
SIM card replacement can only be done by the SIM card owner and not their representatives, at only Ugx 1,500.
