Reigning Miss World Vanessa Ponce De Leon made history by becoming the first Miss World to visit the Pearl of Africa as she touched down at Entebbe Airport yesterday. She was all smiles as she made her way into the capital Kampala while waving to adoring fans and media that had gathered to welcome her.
She was invited by organisers of Miss Uganda and is here to grace the Grand finale of Miss Uganda scheduled for Friday 26th of July at Kampala Serena Hotel and also visit her friend and reigning Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo’s “Beauty With A Purpose” projects back home in Busoga.
The 27-year-old Mexican later while addressing journalists told a packed media briefing at Sheraton Hotel that she is so happy to be in Uganda and that she become friends with Abenakyo while at the camp at Miss World where they both made it to the top 5, with Vanessa ending up as Miss World, while Abenakyo settled for 4th place as Miss World –Africa.
“She is my sister now and I can’t wait to see her projects under the ‘Beauty with A Purpose’ theme. When I see Quin, I remember the moment when we both made it to top 5 and we were both excited and scared at the same time. She held my hands and asked what we would do next”. The visibly excited Vanessa said.
Vanessa who will be here up to Saturday is accompanied with a team from the Miss World led by the CEO Julia Evelyn Morley and is also expected to be hosted at a state visit as part of her Pearl of Africa tour that will see her engage in some projects under the ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ theme
The Miss World visit was however in plan because every year, the Miss World queen visits countries where the top five finalists at Miss World coronation come from and Uganda’s chance came thanks to Abenakyo’s excellent performance where she made it to top 5.
MTN Uganda who recently announced a partnership and sponsorship deal with Miss Uganda reiterated their support once again for the projects to support youth being undertaken by Miss Uganda even after the crowning of the new queen.
The Miss popularity category has also been renamed ‘Miss Pulse’ as part of the deal where the public will vote for their favourite contestant via SMS. MTN was joined by several other partners and sponsors whose representatives spoke of their support for the pageant.
Ms Hellen Karungi the MTN Youth Segment Manager while making the announcement recently told journalists that, MTN is super excited about the sponsorship and ready to work with the organisers Kezzy Entertainment to see that the partnership grows into something big. This was also echoed by Isaac Tegule the Brand Manager, communications at MTN Uganda at yesterday’s presser.
And indeed Miss Uganda Quin Abenakya took her guest to Busoga where she checked her projects. Vanessa will also have a chance to tour some of the interesting parts of the country.
