When it comes to Ugandan hip hop one of the prominent names that keeps coming up is Navio. The Klear Kut artiste has remained at the summit of the hip hop industry since time memorial. His tenacity and versatility has seen him put Ugandan hip hop on the map following massive collaborations with international artistes like R Kelly, Keith Sweat and Burna Boy among others.
Trying to add a spin of his culture to his music, Navio released his Njogereza video which has rather been a jaw dropper with several fans applauding him since he’s commonly known for singing in English.
“Njogereza” is full of traditional chanting and traditional instrumentation, musically directed by Paddy Man.
“You would expect the fans to have been unhappy with this departure from the norm but the audio has received nothing but love thus far. The fact is, it gets no “realer” than traditional music. If Hip Hop is seeded in anti establishment and anti-colonial notions… then this would be one of his “realest” songs to date. Like the unexpected work on Kanye’s “Twisted, Dark fantasy” or Drake’s “Hotline Bling” it comes in at the perfect moment. A bonus on the most critically acclaimed UG Hip Hop album “The Chosen”,” Navio said.
