They promised to change the face of the local football in Uganda and it seems Onduparaka FC from Arua in Westnile are serious about their promise as they have just secured a very vital away win against Sodolin Paints that moves them to third on the table standings of the Azam Uganda Premier league.
That means the team with a very big and passionate following across the country will finish the first half of the league in that respectable (third) position where they are rubbing shoulders with the big boys. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who lost 1-0 to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA FC)in Mehta Stadium in Lugazi, remain top of the table. While Sports Club Villa stay second after overcoming Kirinya-Jinja S.S 0-2 away in Jinja
Onduparaka without talismanic skipper Muhammad Shaban scored through Gadafi Gadhino Cypher. This was after the midfielder curling a beautiful 25-yeard free kick after just 25 minutes of first half. The team led by towering Cranes defender Toha Rashid ‘Per’ and Goalkeeper Richard Anyama then held on to finish strongly defensively despite a soggy pitch to the excitement of the travelling fans who had stormed Jinja in big numbers.
“This win will go a long way in silencing our Shaban and Onduparaka critics who had called us flukers. Now they are going to start taking us seriously” Said an elated Onduparaka FC fan who only identified himself as Andama of Ondu.
Shaban who was sidelined with a hip injury was recently voted Airel-FUFA Player of the year, something that did not go well with some sections of the soccer fraternity who questioned the mode of selection. He sat this last game of the year on the bench and will return to action with the national team preparing for the African Cup of Nations due in January 2017. Check table standing belew.
