Uganda’s 3,000m steeplechase pioneer Common Wealth champion Champion Dorcus Inzikuru was officially swept off her feet as she was walked down the Isle in a modest ceremony at St. Francis in Makerere University this morning by a one Maniku Desantos from Lower Madi, Rigbo Sub County.
This came at the best timing for the athletics fraternity especially just a few days after Ugandans Stella Chesang and long-distance superstar Joshua Kepsegei impressed at the Gold Coast Coats Common Wealth games with Gold medals in Australia.
Inzikuru became a house-hold name in the world of athletics after winning the first ever women’s gold medal in steeplechase 3,000m at the Common Commonwealth games in Melbourne in 2006. Stella Chesang has since followed in her footsteps.
Uganda however, is in more celebratory moods because Inzikuru also happened to weed in the week where Joshua Kipsegei dominated the long distance races.
Our sources at the function however say it was a low key event as most of the government dignitaries who were invited for the event did not turn up and neither were the people from National Council of Sports. Honourable Atiku Benard of Ayiuvu was the only member of parliament present while Speaker sent apologies through him with 2million with no one from central government representing. The reception according to the MP was done in Kyebando Kisalosalo at the LC 1 chairperson’s home under a dilapidated tent with rain drizzles disrupting the function and forcing guests to take refuge at the veranda.
