Since the police failed to intervene in Joram Mwesigye’s case of assaulting WBS journalist Andrew Lwanga a couple of months back, President Museveni has offered his support to the journalist by paying for his treatment abroad.
The President last Sunday directed his staff to follow the case after a fellow journalist brought up the matter during a press conference in Rwakitura. “Who is that journalist was injured? Please follow up this one. I would want to support that person,” the ordered his staff.
Mr Lwanga was reportedly assaulted by Mr Mwesigye on January 12, 2015, on Namirembe Road near Florida Bar and Guest House in Kampala while covering a demonstration by a group of unemployed youth, damaging his nervous system. He has been bed-ridden since then and his situation is just getting worse each day that goes by according to his mother Miss Jennipher Lwanga.
“My son’s condition is getting worse every day and doctors have informed me that his nerves were greatly damaged by the lashes. He now has to fly to the USA for further treatment at a cost of $50,000 (about Shs174 million).” His mother said.
The former police commander on the other hand has since been banned and charged with assault and malicious damage according to Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court. The case will resume on February 4th for the last State witness of the trial.
