New blood Rachael Mirembe known by her stage name Recho Rey stunned many established rappers like MC Yallah and Facie to win the Female Rapper of the Year award at the recently concluded MTN HipHop Awards held at the MTN Headquarters on Jinja Road.
She also won the Rookie of the Year award after emerging victorious against all odds as she had to tussle it out with gifted boys in this particular category.
Recho Rey just came on to the music scene recently after participating in the ‘Who Is Who’ rap challenge initiated by another word-smith Feffe Bussi who also coincidentally walked away with the Male Rapper of the Year award at the same ceremony.
Although the surprise winner on the day was Gravitty Omutujju, his win as Central Rapper of the year did not only raise eyebrows, but was loudly booed when his name was read out. Recho Rey too was nominated in this same category and was a favourite of many to win it as well.
The Lugaflo rapper looked the odd man out in the category that also had JK Lubanto, Fefe Bussi, Jim Nola MC who are predominantly hardcore urban rappers and the crowd seems unimpressed with his win. Luckily for him, he was not in attendance to receive his trophy personally.
In an era where hiphop is fast growing and being widely recognized, it was only befitting to award Dawoo a sound engineer and record producer The Lifetime Achievement Award which also gave him an opportunity to witness the level of growth the genre in which he massively contributed is at now.
Recho Rey who is hardly a year in the industry proved to him that the foundations he actively contributed in laying were firm enough to produce such talent in a very short time.
“I had a passion of music ever since I was young but then I started doing real music at the end of 2017 and in December, I was one of the winners of the MTN Cypher Ug Hip pop awards where I emerged third runner up”.
“I am very new in the industry but I am very optimistic that I am going to make it happen in all ways of life and sooner I will be above the crowd leading this Hip-Hop thing.” She confidently told Chano8 in an exclusive interview last year.
She has since grown into a force to reckon with just a year with new songs playing regularly including ‘Who is She’ which received a massive acclaim during the ‘WhoiS Who’ challenge and Guma Bakunyige Remix in which she features Mun G.
With her flexibility and versatility where she is comfortable in different genres, the sky is not eventhe limit for her. A new star has officially been born and will be one to look at closely.
The colorful event which was organized by Talent Africa and Tribe UG and sponsored by MTN Uganda is aimed at recognizing the hip hop musicians that made 2018 a good year for the industry.
Miss Deedan and Timothy Code were the hosts while Kenyan rapper Rabbit King aka King Kaka was guest entertainer.
