After a somehow subdued opening ceremony in which the performances were timid apart from a beautiful Jennifer Lopez displaying her well formed curves focused mainly on heritage which some critics referred to as un-Brazilian, many fans have been warming themselves in anticipation for an exciting closing ceremony in which the hosts would take part in contesting for the trophy at the final of the world cup in Maracana.
However, the expectations were cut short as the samba boys’ shaky journey to the World cup final was brought to an abrupt and brutal end in Belo Horizonte by an unforgiving, well- drilled Germany machine that was so efficient and clinical in front of goal. The hosts were left stunned and clueless with fans shell-shocked and confused not knowing what exactly had hit them.
The Germans tore a miserable Selecao into shreds in their own back yard at Estadio Miniero in an opening 29 Minutes that saw a free flowing attacking football combined with tactical awareness and an eye for goal. At the end of first half, goals from Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos (2), Sami Khedira and Miroslav Kose who set a new World cup scoring record of 16 goals ensured the match was all, but ended as a contest.
More second half goals from substitute Andre Schurrle compounded more misery living the more than 50,000 fans in horror and majority in tears. By this time the frustrated Soccer-mad Brazilian fans were now cheering Germany, Ironically shifting allegiances as a protest to their embarrassing team. They booed the abysmal players like Fred and hauled insults and jeers throughout.
With many hoping the hosts had saved their best for last for a carnivore and Samba dance atmosphere on the closing ceremony, things look bleak and now the glimmer of hope after the quarter final win over Colombia evaporated within minutes on Tuesday.
The fans will now reluctantly either support their South American rivals Argentina (Who booked their place with a 4-2 penalty shootout against Netherlands) or Germany the team that annihilated them condemning them to their biggest defeat at this stage and first home loss in 39 years.
Brazil known for its soccer crazy people, Samba dance and Exciting colourful Carnivores where celebrations can go on for days on the streets, squares, beaches and night clubs has now turned into a sombre mood with some fans turning violent against each other according to media reports coming from over there.
Some will point at the absence of talismanic striker Neymer who broke a vertebrae bone in his back and inspirational captain Tiago who was suspended as the excuse for the poor showing, but truth remains Brazil were poor from day one. They Lucked confidence and the flare associated with Brazilian soccer, save for a few moments of brilliance from Neymer who scored four goals.
As we await for the final, we hope they recover on time at least to give us the final Samba dance entertainment this year’s world cup deserves.
