RESULT: Zambia 0-2 Uganda
Of course his talent is not in doubt but former Onduparaka and current KCC sharp shooter Muhammad ‘Jaggarson’ Shaban always generates debate and seems to leave a trail of dust where ever he crosses a path even where is muddy. The young striker yesterday scored twice in Uganda Hippo’s 2-0 victory over Zambia Young Chipolopolo Stars in the COSAFA U-20 Championship at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe to start the journey for the East Africans in high gear.
In the build up to the COSAFA U-20 tournament, there has been heated debate in some media cycles as to why the man from Westnile was not included in the Cranes team that is also currently competing in the CECAFA senior challenge Cup in Nairobi Kenya where they have fired blanks in their opening match.
However, the authorities decided to name him in the junior side and added the responsibly of not only leading the lines but also skippering. This seems to have inspired him coupled with the desire to put his haters in their ‘right places’, he straight away went about his business.
After a lively start, in the first half where he made promising runs in the opponents danger zone and even hit the wood work, the striker opened the scoring 7 minutes into second half tapping in from a Steven Mukwala cross as he reacted fastest to send Uganda top of group A.
As most Ugandans who were watching back home on television were still celebrating, four minutes later , goalkeeper Saidi Keni launched a long ball into the path of Shaban who raced clear and then looped the ball over the advancing Young Chipolopolo Stars goalkeeper.
As the Zambians pressed forward to get something out of the game, Uganda Hippos’ technical bench made a change which saw Allan Okello replacing Pius Obuya while Kagimu Shafik came in for Frank Tumwesigye to neutralize things. Finally Victor Matovu replaced Mustafa Kizza but the Hippos continued to look lively with Shaban who won man of the match causing most of the trouble.
Uganda is now top of Group A with their next game on Friday against Swaziland, who fell 3-2 to Malawi in the opener.
In other games Mozambique Lost 0-1 to Egypt as Malawi beat Swaziland 2-3. Uganda next plays Swaziland on today Friday.
