Before Ugandans could over the news of 21-year-old Joshua Cheptegei who made Uganda proud by winning Gold in the ongoing 2018 Common Wealth Games that are taking place in Gold Coast, Australia, another Ugandan athlete Stella Chesang has also on Monday the 9th of April won Gold in the women’s 10,000 metres race.
The 21- year-long distance runner Stella managed to beat the other runners to the Gold medal which has now become Uganda’s second medal in these games. The same race where Stellah won also had another Ugandan representative Mercyline Chelangati who came third winning Bronze. Kenyan Stacy Ndiwa came second from Chesang winning silver
“What’s wrong if I take the gold from my neighbour? Stacy is my very good neighbour across the fence” Stella joked after the race
She ran the 25 lap race (10000 metres) in 31 minutes 45 seconds and 30 microseconds at Carrara Stadium in Australia and in 2016, she also competed in the 5000 metres at the Olympics although she did not win any medal.
Although we can’t be in Australia to personally hug and say a big thank you to her, by the time we went to press, Ugandans were already storming social media to congratulate the young girl upon this milestone
