During the meeting that was held at Kampala Serena Hotel to launch the first Uganda Contractors and Providers Summit slated for 12th to 13th of November under the theme ‘Buy Uganda, Build Uganda from a contractors’ perspective’, the minister of trade and industry Amelia Kyambadde has urged local contractors to get informed about the tender opportunities.
Mr Amelia also cautioned the local contractors to be aware of the corruption in the tender process and the middlemen who are exploiting them.
“Please be-ware of these middlemen. There is corruption in the tender process. They make bidding expensive, every bidding step you make they ask for money” Kyambadde said.
In the same meeting, Guster Bukenya, a representative from Uganda Contractors and Providers and MD of Beautiful Engineering and Equipment Limited said that they seek to create a platform to develop skills that can enable local contractors be part of the procurement cycle.
Bukenya continued to say that local contractors face financial challenges and other challenges that impact on their performance yet they have stepped up in terms of both quality and quantity.
“Contractors can play an important role in creating jobs, enable social and economic development,” he said.
“We want local contractors who are often made sub-contractors to grow and become the main contractors, local contractors have stepped up in terms of both quality and quantity,” Bukenya added.
The First Uganda Contractors and Providers Summit slated for 12th to 13th which is a few weeks from now will be attended by president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who will be the guest of honour
