With Straight Outta Compton nominated for an Oscar award for Best Original Screen Play, here is something you need to know about the movie.
Straight Outta Compton is an American drama that’s about the rise and fall of the legendary hip hop N.W.A (Niggas with attitude). The movie which borrows its title from the 1988 debut album of the famous group takes a look at the lives and careers of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Easy E, Dj Yella and Mc Ren.
When Eazy E is almost busted by police for dealing narcotics, he goes to club and finds Dr Dre who was just a DJ with big dreams of starting his own record. Eazy E scared of being thrown to jail decides to invest and form a rap group with Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Yella under Ruthless Records. With the first song ‘Boys in the hood’ being a massive sale, Jerry Heller approaches Eazy E and asks whether he can manage them and they accepted.
Following police brutality on them and the black community, the group decides to release a diss track, something that even had the FBI complaining. All attempts to suppress their freedom of speech were futile as they gave the group more ratings and popularity.
However, the strong brotherhood within N.W.A started vanish when Ice Cube suspected Jimmy and Eazy E of reaping the rest of the crew off. He promptly confronts the two and is told that the remaining contracts are still being written. Finally, on the night before the group returns home from their tour, Cube meets with Jimmy, who tries to coerce him into signing a contract but he refuses and decides to opt out in order to pursue a solo career.
Ice Cube’s first single blew the chats away making the remaining N.W.A members jealous and they opted to release a diss track for Ice Cube. Angered by this, he makes a diss track attacking the group and Jimmy Heller the manager.
During this time, Dr. Dre becomes associated with Suge Knight who convinces him to start his own record label with him. Realizing that Heller is taking advantage of him, Dre meets with Eazy-E to try and work out the contract. When this fails, Dre leaves the group and forms Death Row Records with Knight.
