Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the La Liga to four points after overcoming Real Madrid 2-1 at the Camp Nou in an action packed match that saw former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez score the winner in a thrilling second half.
Jeremy Mathieu scored his first La Liga goal early on in the first half but World player of the year Cristiano Ronado levelled things before half time in a pulsating El Clasco.
Barca went ahead after Suarez won a free-kick which Lionel Messi swung into the middle and French centre-back Mathieu arrived unmarked to send a perfectly placed header past the diving Iker Casillas.
After some missed chances on both ends, Real then immediately broke and Benzema’s brilliant backheel found Ronaldo for a low stabbed finish. From this point, the visitors were in ascendancy till end of first half.
They continued the trend immediately after kickoff of second half o in the opening period as Gareth Bale had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside.
Ronaldo forced a good save from Claudio Bravo with a thunderous long-range drive and Bale sent a great right-footed chance wide from the subsequent corner.
Barca then re-established the advantage with a decidedly route one goal as Dani Alves delivered a long ball over the top and Suarez produced a brilliant control and then steered a perfectly placed low finish into the bottom left corner.
The Catalan side then took full control with a series of missed chances.
