The Uganda Cranes yesterday registered a historic victory 1-0 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana. The Group E encounter played in Namboole saw the two sides tussling it out for a place in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.
The Afcon to be held in Equatorial Guinea next year has been dominated by the story of Morocco withdrawing from hosting the finals because of fears of spread of the deadly Ebola virus which has ravaged some West African countries.
Uganda cranes’ lonely goal scored by defender Savio Gabugo came in the early stages of first half from a Mike Sserumaga corner. By the time the West Africans settled in the game, Uganda Cranes fans were already in celebratory mood basing on an impressive home record which has only one loss in the last ten years at home.
The Black Stars that boast of a star studded line up of professional footballers did not threaten the home side that much and their star players like Andrew Ayew were kept quite throughout the match and their passing game was well contained.
It became a humiliation towards the end of the match when the home side even threatened to add on their goals tally only to be let down by poor finishing from the strikers.
Uganda will now travel to Casablanca, Morocco to face Guinea on Wednesday knowing victory will end the 37 painful years of absence from the Afcon finals.
