The Uganda National senior soccer team ‘The Cranes’ were this afternoon involved in a nasty accident that media reports indicate have claimed the lives of about 8 people. The Uganda Cranes players were travelling from Soroti district after meeting President Yoweri Museveni when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a taxi at Jami in Kamonkoli, Budaka district.
Several people have also been reported injured with others in serious condition that were rushed to Mbale regional hospital for immediate attention.
The accident happened after the Cranes bus got a puncture in one of the rear tires and the driver lost control ramming into the taxi No. UAT 573M with many casualties in the taxi. However fortunately, all the players and officials are fine with a few minor injuries sustained to Hassan Wasswa, Keziron Kizito and Denis Okot. FUFA has already made a statement to confirm the unfortunate incidence;
“The Uganda Cranes team has been involved in a motor accident at Kamokoli – Jami near Mbale Town where the Bus has collided with a Taxi Van today, Tuesday 8th December 015 at around 15:30 hrs East African Time after a Front Tyre puncture on the Cranes Bus.
All the Uganda Cranes players and officials are safe with however four people given first Aid treatment.
These include Ahmed Hussein (FUFA Communications head), Players Kezironi Kizito, Denis Okot Oola and Hassan Wasswa Dazo. Efforts have been made to secure another transport means and the Uganda Cranes contingent is on their way to Kampala.”Reads a statement on the FUFA website.
The Cranes were returning to Kampala from Soroti where they had gone to present the CECAFA trophy which they won over the weekend in Ethiopia. The taxi was heading to Mbale from Kampala.
Traffic police officers have blamed the accident on reckless driving. We will bring you more updates as they unfold.
