Team Uganda emerged the winners at the inaugural edition of the ladies’ Africa Fives Soccer Championships played at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es-Salaam, Tanzania over the weekend.
The Africa Fives is a social football league for both ladies and men where football and friends come together over a beer
Nile Breweries’ Nile Special sponsored the team of ladies comprising of players like Memory Nampijja, Wilmer Nantumbwe ,Vanessa Karungi, Brenda Nabisaalu, Brenda Makanga and Sarah Namulindwa who beat Tanzania 1-0 in the final played last Saturday afternoon.
The captain Nampijja made Uganda proud by scoring the only goal in the ninth minute of the 12-minute first half.
Despite the fact that the Tanzania side had a very big number of spectators in support of them, it didn’t stop Ugandan ladies to hold on in the second half with goalkeeper Karungi making a couple of saves to guide the Pearl of Africa to victory.
“We are happy to bring this trophy home,” said team captain Nampijja after receiving the trophy from tournament ambassador Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon
Following their victory, the team will travel with former Cameroonian striker Eto’o to FC Barcelona’s home Camp Nou is Spain.
Speaking about the women’s side triumph, Nile Special brand manager Francis Nyende was ecstatic and visibly in shock at the result.
“This Uganda’s inaugural participation in this tournament, and we have won the trophy! This is unbelievable. Kudos to the girls who have given it their everything. As a brand heavily involved in sports, we hope this victory will inspire more ladies to play this game,” said Nyende.
The 5s Tournament is organized by Nile Breweries’ parent company Ab-Inev and 8 countries took part at this year’s edition including hosts Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Eswatini.
