Social media has become an integral part of modern society. There are general social networks with user bases larger than the population of most countries. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and WhatsApp are some of the popular social media sites that are being used in Uganda.
Last Friday during the historical first-ever Presidential debate, Uganda made headlines by becoming the most trending on twitter as the debate was going on.The hash tag #UGDecides16 was the most active and most interactive throughout.
The three-hour debate was twitted 620,900 times much more than International story of NewYork values which had 480,300 tweets.
This was a clear indication that Uganda’s Presidential Debate owned the internet and its trending did not stop at only that as we received some minutes on international channels like CNN, BBC, Aljazeera and CCTV on top of trending on Facebook, Instagram and other social media channels.
Statistics has it that Broadcasting and Telecommunication annual report released by the Uganda Communications Commission, mobile subscription currently stands at 19 million while the number of Internet users in the country stands at 9.5million users up from 2.8million users registered six years ago.
Presidential candidate Joseph Elton Mabirizi who became a social media hit after the debate has since been trending and yesterday his hash tag #AskMabirizi was also active as his followers engaged him in a 3 hour QnA session.
