Manchester United’s captain Wayne Rooney was sent off as his side clung on to resolutely beat West Ham for their second league win of the season.
The home side were cruising after Rooney swept in a Rafael cross and Robin van Persie rifled in a low shot from a Radamel Falcao pass.
But Diafra Sakho nodded in for the Hammers from a corner which Enner Valencia had initially headed onto the cross bar before Rooney was sent off for a reckless tackle on Stewart Downing which appeared to be in retaliation for a handball decision which the referee had earlier ignored.
Enner Valencia shot wide and Kevin Nolan had an effort ruled out for offside as the home side held on. With United moving up to seventh on the table after six games played.
Title favourites Chelsea swept aside Aston Villa 3-0 while defending champions Manchester City had to dig deep to overcome Hull City 2-4. Elsewhere, Liverpool were held to a one all draw at by Everton as Arsenal also came from behind to level 1-1 in the London Derby.
