Ivory Coast and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure was not impressed and actually was totally pissed off after he lost to Gabon and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the race for the Confederation of Africa’s footballer of the year award.
Toure who captained the victorious Ivorian side that won the African Cup of nations last year was angered after the results were announced and was visibly disappointed with the outcome. He publically expressed his anger after he felt ‘cheated’.
He told the media after the award ceremony that he felt it was embarrassing for the continent to award some one whose success was not in Africa but rather abroad. He also felt his success with the National team deserved the recognition and specifically, the Cafe award.
“We Africans, we do not show that Africa is important to us,”
“We give more priority to what’s going on elsewhere than in our own continent. This is what is appalling.
“I give an example: it’s Lionel Messi who wins all the trophies but it’s Ronaldo who is Ballon d’Or. What would you say? It would be unfair.” Said the 32-year old lanky midfielder.
Where as 26-year old Aubemayang becomes the first to win the award for Gabon, Toure had won the CAF award for the previous four years and was even recently crowned BBC African footballer of the year for 2015.
