Africa Day 2021 was commemorated in different African countries. It is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 5 May 1963.
Although the organisation (OAU) was later transformed into the African Union (AU) on 9th July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated every 25th May.
This year’s Africa Day theme was “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”.
It’s against this background that MTV Base and YouTube organized the Africa Day Concert which was hosted by Idris Elba, an English actor, writer, producer, rapper, singer, songwriter and Dj.
The concert was held virtually in full observation of the safety measures aimed at curbing down the Covid-19 pandemic
This year’s concert was headlined by Africa’s new breed of talented artistes from different countries and Uganda was represented by Swangz Avenue’s Azawi, rapper Fik Fameica and Eddy Kenzo although they didn’t perform but contribute.
Artistes performed on multiple stages from Lagos to Johannesburg to Kampala in an event that was streamed live for the whole world to watch on YouTube, as well as on the MTV channels.
The event also featured some of the most dynamic emerging artistes from Europe, Australia and the United States of America.
Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Emerging Markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at YouTube, said he was happy that Idris Elba and MTV base, Africa did a good job in hosting the event.
“With African music continuing to connect and inspire people around the world, the timing is perfect to shine the spotlight on the next wave of African artists that will make a global impact on music and culture.” He said in an interview.
