It has been a tight contest at the end as 3 teams took it to the wire in Spain but Barcelona pipped their bitter rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title on the final day thanks to a Luis Suarez hat-trick at Granada.
Barcelona after leading the chasing pack by 9 points on April 1st then invited their closest rivals Real and Atletico into the fray after 3 consecutive losses but a fifth victory in a row ensured they won the league by one point from Real, who beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 with Cristiano Ronlado scoring twice to heighten the tension.
The party kicked off when former Liverpool danger man Suarez tapped in, then powered home a header and slotted Neymar’s pass to give him La Liga’s golden boot with 40 goals ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo who finished on 35 goals.
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane conceded Barcelona are deserved La Liga champions after losing out to their arch-rivals despite Real winning their last 12 league games.
“We’re all disappointed, but with 38 match days played, we can’t change anything now,” said Zidane, who has won 21 of his 26 games in charge.
“Barcelona deserved to win La Liga.” The great Frenchman added.
