Bebe Cool

Bebe Cool’s rendition of Philly Bongole Lutaya’s ‘Born in Africa’ song has been voted among Africa’s greatest songs of all time. The song comes at number 15 in Fifty anthems for the African continent.

BBC World Service listeners suggested the African songs that summed up the continent to them. This was to mark the 50th anniversary of the African Union – formerly the Organisation of African Unity,

From the suggestions, the BBC’s DJ Edu, who hosts a weekly African music show on BBC radio, compiled them into a special five-minute mix of 50 songs from 50 countries.

Bebe Cool who performed the song in London during Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday has something to brag about following the nomination of fellow Ugandan artists Jose Chameleone and the Goodlyfe duo of Radio and Weasel in World Music awards, MTVAMA and BET Awards.

  • DJ Edu is a Kenyan-born, London-based DJ who presents 1Xtra’s Destination Africa show
