Fresh from being hosted as one of the Acts at the Zanzibar international Film Festival, the much traveled Brian Bugenyi is back and itching to pump in some fresh energy into tonight’s Qwela Junction ‘The Sax Aces’ that starts at 6:00PM in Victoria ball room Kampala Serena Hotel.
The Qwela Junction is a quarterly musical collaborative concert by Qwela Band featuring top instrumentalists collaborating with each other. This time round, the organizers have assembled the top Saxophonists in the country for a mission to serenade tonight dubbed the Sax Aces which features Joe Kahiri, Joseph Sax, Mo Roots, Micheal Kitanda, Happy Kyazze, Afrigo’s veteran Moses Matovu and Brian Mugenyi himself
Brian an accomplished Musician, Composer, Singer and song writer came to the lime light after working with some of Uganda’s leading bands Qwela and Code 9 until he decided to go solo in 2012.
He started music at a tender age of 8 where he started by learning how to play different instruments from his local church and later perfected the art at the Africa institute of music where he dedicated five years to perfecting his lifetime passion and talent in music and majored in classical piano and minoring in Saxophone.
He has since developed a unique style of music that blends a variety of genres ranging from the 80’s funk and soul to afro soul fusion and the latest electronic dance music in the process creating his own identity that has taken him places and in the end working with different artistes from across the globe on various projects.
“The music I do isn’t entirely Jazz. I have elements of Jazz in my music but my music is a fusion of African traditional elements with Western music elements. I love to do Afro –Pop, Electronic Dance music, Soul and RnB so I write music from all those categories. I can’t say am a jazz musician but I don’t only play saxophone” Brian told www.chano8.com in an exclusive interview which you can read find in the September Issue.
Brian’s solo career has been on the up and released his amazing debut album “Take Time” in 2013 which is a collection of wonderful gospel tunes redone in various relaxing styles, and is also set to release his new 15 track album late this year, titled “Dawn”.
