The celebrations continue as Uganda Airlines marks one year in the aviation. However, the extended celebrations were forced after photos of a cake made by their Insurance provider Britam went viral on the internet for the wrong reasons after it received a massive backlash from Ugandans and across the globe because of its “below’ the standard looks”.
The cake which many described as unappealing was offered as part of celebrations when partners held a scientific party at Entebbe Airport but immediately the photos went online, it received a public uproar and backlash especially on social media where Uganda Airlines were the victims as they were bashed for doing a “Soddy job once again”.
As the ‘dissing’ went on and on, management of Britam decided to come out and own up the blunder accepting it was their fault to come up with that cake which was deemed ugly especially for a company of Uganda Airlines’ stature and caliber.
“We tried baking a cake and fell flat on our faces! You may have seen unflattering photos of what was our attempt to celebrate Uganda Airlines’ First Anniversary circulating online. Some say, that it is not the gift, but the thought that counts most, right?
“Well, we agree with a majority of you who said the cake did not do justice to this massive milestone and the occasion at hand. Britam wrote in a statement about 2 weeks ago.
So, the company then decided to throw it back to the public by announcing a bake-off challenge dubbed ‘The Great Britam Bake Off Challenge’ open to all bakers in the country which culminated in the process of designing a new cake that was officially cut this morning.
After the selection process which was done on social media, Cake Album Uganda emerged the overall winners and unveiled the winning design ready baked. Others who made it in the top 5 included Seasons Of Joy Creations Ltd, Nalwadda Mariam, Cilla’s Oven, and D’Cake Fairy who also picked any Charity Organization of their choice as the beneficiary of the donations from Britam and Uganda Airlines for the winning designs.
“We are excited & thankful to Uganda Airlines for giving us a second opportunity to celebrate their first anniversary; we also thank the Ugandans who challenged us to do better. We have now decided to make ‘The Great Britam Bake Off Challenge’ annual event”. Mr. Allan Mafabi, CEO Britam Uganda said.
Mafabi also said despite all the trolls they were happy with their gift and continue to be y sharing their joy and admitted they failed badly and accepted the responsibility with grace.
“When someone in the marketing department said we were being trolled on social media, I said no, we were actually not being bashed, but we were being shown love by Ugandans” The CEO Uganda Airlines Mr. Cornwell Muleya said amidst loud cheers from the attendees that mainly comprised Uganda Airlines staff, Britam Officials and invited media.
He added that soon the company is unveiling bigger lanes and opening new routes to the Middle East and the Far East up to China (specifically Guangzhou state).
The winning cake designed in the form of Entebbe Airport terminal sitting on the map of Uganda had a Bombardier Airplane as its main attribute standing majestically in take-off position. It was then cut and shared for the guests to have a taste bringing the saga to a happy ending till next year.
