Chameleone, Afrigo And Cindy Set To Light Up ‘Scientific’ Nyege Nyege Music Festival

It is no longer a secret that this year’s edition of the Nyege Nyege music and arts festival will be going digital because of the ban on big crowds as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The pandemic has wrecked havoc across the globe, causing several countries like Uganda to close their borders, ban international and local passenger flights, and even declare lockdowns and curfews as stringent measures to curb the spread of the deadly disease.

All gatherings, whether social religious or political that attract huge crowds have been banned with most now being held in a ‘scientific’ manner where only a few key people are allowed.

Organisers of the continental fete known for attracting huge crowds from all over the world announced last week that they will be putting together a ‘scientific party’ they describe as a “A Custom Digital Experience” for their fans instead of the traditional festival that usually takes place at Nile Discovery Beach at the source of River Nile in Jinja.

“Transcending boundaries once again, this year the pioneering African music festival combines a COVID safe party in Uganda with a custom digital experience, showcasing breathtaking music co-curated by 20 collectives from across the Continent”. They posted in a statement on twitter.

They also followed the announcement with start-studded line up of both local and international artistes and DJs that will light up the digital experience from September 3-6. Among the local acts included veteran singer Jose Chameleone and the legendary Afrigo band. Also Cinderella Sanyu aka Cindy who had a successful ‘Boom Party’ concert earlier this year will feature among others.

The organizers say it will be a “Hybrid Festival Of The Arts”

“In collaboration with collectives, crews and cultural pioneers across the Continent, Nyege Nyege’s 2020 edition will present a hybrid format mixing the physical and the digital. A temporary online space will be created and curated by Jepchumba founder of African Digital Art, hosting 25 collectives who will present live music, dj sets, secret raves, dance battles and cyphers, performances and happenings, talks, rituals, a digital gallery, love and a lots of hope. The platform will be unveiled July 15th. While for the physical party in Uganda, Nyege Nyege will announce details in August”.
