Well for those who had doubted the ability of David Lutalo to rise among the top artistes in Uganda, he proved it beyond doubt last night at his Manya concert by pulling a record crowd at Hotel Africa Parking space that shocked and excited the diminutive singer in equal measure.
The singer who came to prominence in 2007 with his block buster hit song ‘Kapapaala’ aged 19, was being fronted as a one hit wonder by some sections of the media then.
He however stuck in and gave it a push that paid off with more hit songs that dominated the airwaves and went on to release 4 albums Yamba, Gyetugenda, Kapaapala, Mapenzi, Far Away that climaxed with his major concert for ‘Akantu’ that attracted a massive crowd at Hotel Africana in 2014 which some critics still counted as a one off.
The Luwero born Afro-pop singer did not however sleep in his laurels and allow the success of his first album launch and successive hit songs cloud his focus as he went back to the drawing board or rather sketch book and in 2014 released hit after hit that unofficially made him the top artiste of the year with songs like, Pretty, Far Away, Nandikulese Mukyalo, Hellena ft Goodlyfe and Mubbi Mubbi ft Maro.
So after putting his critics and haters in their place what was next on the agenda for Lutalo? You guessed it right, a massive concert to send a strong everlasting message that would cement his place among the Crème de la Crème of Uganda’s music industry and oh boy he did it in style last night. Not only did the fans turn up in big numbers, they were visibly excited as well throughout the concert.
The father of two stepped up on stage at around 9.45pm after a flurry of performances from curtain raisers that were limited to only 1 song per artiste. He had assembled a live band to accompany him on the well constructed, spacious and well-lit stage courtesy of Silk events oh, and the sound was on point tooas his dancers warmed up the stage.
His adoring fans waited eagerly as young dancers warmed the stage. And when he finally appeared looking calm and fresh in a military black suit, he took the crowd to a musical journey that included his old songs like ‘Kapapaala’ to the more recent ones like ‘Mubbi Mubi’ where he was joined on stage by Maro. The fans sang along to his sweet melodies.
However, time was not on his side as a lot was already eaten up by the long list of curtain raisers as well as politicians who tried to turn the concert into a campaign, rally especially business man Godfrey Kirumira and FDC strong lady Naggayi Nabillah Ssempala woman MP for Kampala who stormed the stage and chanted political gimmicks.
Therefore, just a minute to midnight, the show was brought to a close after Lutalo performed his current hottest release ‘Ujuwe’ and was told by security that, he could not resume as the place was too packed. The fans were left shell-shocked with the mouths wide open as many of their favourite songs were not performed.
