Denis Onyango kicked off from where he left off with silverware as his team Mamelodi Sundowns took this year’s CAF super cup with a one goal victory over DRC’s TP Mazembe at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria.
This victory comes a few weeks after the Ugandan stopper signed his four year deal to remain at the South African club. The sole goal was scored by Ricardo Nascimento, nine minutes to full time.
Being his Seventh trophy in all competitions, Onyango was so excited.
“I’m so happy for this achievement and it’s every players dream to win all trophies that they participate in. After not having a good show in Japan at the club World Cup (where Sundowns lost all their matches), I had to work hard and get back to the top because I needed the confidence towards the New Year,” he said.
The Ugandan vice-captain also added that this victory is only going to make him work harder and keep him focused and motivated towards a good season this year.
Already, his club is seated in the 5th position with seven points separating them with table leaders Kaizer chiefs with 18 games played.
Onyango helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the Caf Champions League title thus becoming the first goalkeeper and Ugandan to ever win it as well as breaking the same record for the African Player of the Year accolade (based in Africa).
