The long awaited ‘Kwata Essimu’ video was finally released last Saturday and premiered on NTVs Dance Party program where the two artistes Winnie Nwagi and Freeboy performed live before the video was played for the audience.
It was a mixture of excitement and relief after a long wait for both the fans and artistes after the lockdown disrupted the shooting and production.
The song “Kwata Essimu” is an Afro-fusion love song and the local Luganda word when translated to English means “Pick up the Phone”. The unique blend of Kadongo Kamu rhythm and modern Pop rhymes make the song a soothing one.
The video which garnered close to 50k views on YouTube within 24 hours now has 277k views in just a week. It was shot and directed by Hilary Je and Marvin Musoke of Viva Entertainment and Swangz Avenue respectively.
The production is definitely lit and has been massively received by fans and TV stations are blazing it all over the place.
It has a captivating storyline which is set in an African traditional setting portraying love in the country side, where a village fisherman (Freeboy) who is deeply in love with this village belle (Winnie Nwagi) does everything to win her over, including giving her money and spending lavishly on her.
He works hard by going fishing in the night only to emerge in the wee hours to sell his catch. His crash and her friends are there winning him over with wide smiles and indeed he parts with cash from the day’s sales without any hesitation.
The evening is wound at a local bar or ‘Malwa joint’ where the village lover boy together with his buddies sit for an evening drink of Malwa. He sits in a strategic position where he can have a glimpse of his flower doing some home chores as they exchange glances longingly.
The interplay of the dimly lit environs and colorful consumes strike a picturesque view board that keeps the viewers glued. The thrilling silky Buganda cultural dances by the skillful cultural dancers spices up things to add some much needed energy as the acing on the cake.
‘Kwata Essimu’ surely has been one of the biggest or biggest songs of the coronavirus era so far and continues to top charts across the country. Hopefully this can be the much sought breakthrough song for Freeboy into a journey of musical bliss.
