The Hima Cement Heathens were yesterday crowned the 2016 Uganda Cup Champions after beating home team Buzz Black Pirates 20-17 in an absorbing rugby game played at Legends Rugby grounds.
The defending champions threatened to run away with it after taking a commanding 15-3 first a half lead in which they were dominant and made three tries from counter attacks well worked out with particular big man Philip Wokorach (2 tries) taking advantage of a shaky start from the hosts.
When Chris Lubega had stretched the lead to 15-3 at half time, it looked like victory was sealed as the home crowd were subdued.
However a strong second half comeback from Pirates orchestrated by Man of the match Marvin Odongo, took the game to ‘Malaria time’ with pressure mounting on both teams as they pushed for the winning tries after quick tries from Kisiga, Allan Kasozi and Ivan Magomu took Pirates ahead to 17-15.
On a day of poor conversions it was Allan Magomu who tried in that area and made crucial conversions that took Pirates to the brink of silverware with only second remaining on the clock.
However, Heathens who looked the hungrier side had other ideas and bounced back as they pinned the Pirates at their touch line till they crumbled with the Wokorach brothers producing one last moment of magic to seal it as Philip receiving the ball from the right flank decided to pass to his brother Michael with a looping kick for the winning touchdown on the dot.
Captain Michael Wokorach after losing out to Kobs in the league then received the trophy for the second time is as many years to kick-off the celebrations.
“We wanted this badly and went for it especially after losing the league. It was a tough game as Pirates also gave it their all but in the end we wanted it more and pushed till the end”. Wokorach said.
