He might be Uganda’s best saxophonist but Isaiah Katumwa too has people he looks up to and among those is American Kirk Whalum who had a performance in Uganda a few days back during the annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari that also featured Karyn White.
The Ugandan was the only artiste present during the press briefing that took place at Guvnor before the main show and he was seen at the front seat during Kirk’s performance, probably to learn a few things about his idol.
“Finally meeting my hero. Surely our gifts bring us before great men. God has been awesome this year from Jonathan Butler to Hugh Masekela and to Kirk Whalum. I can only say thank you Lord. Dreams surely come true. Extremely grateful to God for such moments.” Isaiah posted.
To justify his love for Kirk, Isaiah even listed him as one of his influences alongside Dave Koz, Kenny G, Gerald Albright, Jonathan Butler, Grover Washington Jnr, Paul Taylor, David Sanborn, Warren Hill, Hugh Masekela and Manu D.
Isaiah Katumwa is Uganda’s Jazz Pioneer whose innovation has inspired, sensitized and converted many to jazz. The self-taught saxophonist has a show on Urban TV every Sunday at 5pm which is aimed at giving tips to improve people’s voices.
