As we talk now, The Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) committee headed by one James Wasula is now on suspension following a raid by Uganda National Culture Forum (UNCF) and Police officers at their offices in Kamwokya in an attempt to suspend them with immediate effect
Ugandan musicians have for so long complained about Wasula because of his continued corruption, misuse of office and musicians revenue. Through the years, it has been the local artistes’ cry to have a transparent and productive collecting society but this has been in vain because of the ‘untouchable’ Wasula and his UPRS committee
The suspension of this committee is allow for effective ongoing inquiry into the constitution, workings and financial conditions of the UPRS in accordance to section 75 of the copyright and neighboring rights act.
“We thank all musicians for sticking together in this fight to redeem our industry and URSB for listening to our plea. We shall liaise with ursb to set up a new, reformed and formidable collecting body.” Read part of the statement from the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) a few hours after UPRS was suspended.
For the meantime, Mr Kabiito Karamagi and Miss Ritah Baguma of Ligormac Advocates have been appointed in consultation and with cooperation with the board of directors of UPRS to temporality oversee the management of UPRS and the activities of the these temporally caretakers will be supervised by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB)
It should be noted that the Uganda National Culture Forum (UNCF) is an umbrella organization of federations and associations from the culture, creative and arts domains with a mandate to support the implementation of the Uganda national culture policy
