Every passing year, Uganda’s music industry continues to achieve greater heights with upcoming artistes doing a great job on this challenging musical journey. Some of the new revelations succeed, while others remain as ‘one hit wonders’. We however still give respect to the ‘veterans’ like Afrigo Band, Madoxx, Dr Jose Chameleone, HE Bobi Wine, Big Size Bebe Cool, Iryn Namubiru, Ragga Dee and Juliana Kanyomozi among many others who have kept the fire burning through the years.
The year 2016 saw various young artistes prove their worth musically, a thing that has garnered them an encouraging fan-base plus their songs reaching out to different individuals near and far. Chano8 picked out some of the most promising artistes who did a wonderful job last year and are expected to take it a notch higher this year.
Badi Music’s Ykee Benda (Farmer) real names Tugume Wycliffe has tirelessly unleashed his singing potential with the help of one of his break through songs ‘Muna Kampala’. He replaced it with the blockbuster ‘Farmer’ early last year. Team No Sleep’s Dancehall Queen Sheebah featured on the song’s remix, turning it into a mega hit that ran the airwaves plus becoming a club banger that always left party animals on their heels.
He is a new kid on the Dancehall scene who produced hit songs like ‘Nice And Good’ and ‘Dangerous’ that got the ladies crazy. He has made appearances on different concerts throughout the year and he has received warm receptions for his work and is expected to carry the momentum into this year.
Straight out of Team No Sleep, the energetic performer Roden Y (Kabako) has been one artiste who when it came to thrilling the crowd has been a sensation. Those who have attended the shows this artiste has performed at will testify to that. The energy he displays on stage is incomparable and he has released hit songs like ‘Kabako’ that has spread its wings among the youthful crowd.
Ragga artiste Lil Pazo had two hit songs last year namely ‘Emundu Evuge’ and ‘Genda Ogule Emotoka’ which have earned a lot of following from the ‘ordinary’ and downtown Ugandan crowd. Those songs also featured prominently on many charts.
Although he had featured before in this category of artistes, with the ‘Pressure Ya Love’ song featuring ‘Walden’, he kind of disappeared from the music scene but made a strong come back last year and the next thing we heard was that he got signed to Team No Sleep camp where he released ‘Wadawa’ song featuring Queen Sheebah and it has proven to be a hit. We also got reliable info that he has lined up a series of songs to strengthen his comeback.
This is so far one of Uganda’s hottest boy-only groups with a promising future. Last year saw them perform at various events plus releasing consecutive singles and collabos like ‘Sure Deal’, ‘Nkwagala’ featuring Maro and ‘Tokigeza’. They are those who spice up their performances with creative dances. We can only hope they take it to the next level in 2017.
