Louis Van Gaal Angry At ‘Stupid’ Chris Smalling After Derby Loss To City

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Chris Smalling’s sending-off in the Manchester derby was “stupid”.

Smalling was dismissed before half-time for two bookable offences – the first for charging down Manchester City keeper Joe Hart’s drop kick, the second for a wild challenge on James Milner.

Manchester City won the chaotic derby at Etihad Stadium as Sergio Aguero’s second-half strike gave the Premier League champions victory over a deplated Manchester United which also saw Marcos Rojo dislocating a shoulder after Chris Smalling was sent off.

City then won 1-0 the Argentine’s 10th goal os the season condemning their bitter rivals to their 4th consecutive derby loss

“In a derby you have to be careful – the second yellow card is a stupid yellow card,” Van Gaal told BBC Sport.

Smalling has enraged Mnager Van Gaal

“The sending-off is not one of those things. As a player you have to control your aggression.

“I didn’t see the first yellow but with the second, you know you already have a yellow, so have to handle it differently. I said that to the players.”

Despite Smalling’s dismissal, United improved after Aguero’s goal, with Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria both drawing good saves out of City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The victory brought some gleam of light after a disappointing week for City that had seen manager Manuel Pellegrini’s side lose at West Ham in the league then see their Capital One Cup defense ended at home by Newcastle.

City are now six points behind title favorites Chelsea in 3rd while United slip to 10th with 13 points from 10 games.
