Banina Empire is a new Ugandan music group comprising of two young talented artistes. Chris and Joe who started up the group last year after spending some time singing individually. Chano8 caught up with the latest music duo dubbed The Baninas and young handsome boys who are making girls go gaga in Kampala.
These guys are hilarious and promising to take over our music industry as a soon as possible. Our reporter caught up with them and had a chat about music, sex and life in general.
Chano8: What Does The Baninas Name Mean?
As you may already know, we are twins and our surname is Banina, so we derived ‘The Baninas’ from our surname.
Chano8: What makes The Baninas different from all these other duos?
Well, The Baninas are different from other duos in many things, first of all the style of music and also most duos are long time friends unlike us who are identical twins.
Chano8: Something about you two guys; how do your fans differentiate between you two? You look exactly the same!!!
Well me, (Ryan Chris) I am bigger than him (Joel Banina) and I have longer dreads, that’s how our fans manage to differentiate us.
Chano8: Who Are Your Biggest Influences?
Well, we are inspired by many things, besides passion, we are influenced by the everyday life, love just like our first song ‘Win Anything’ which was about love.
Chano8: How did you did guys come up with the idea of starting music?
It was always our dream since childhood, we wanted music and we knew one day one time we would become singers, probably world stars.
Chano8: So guys I want each of you to tell me about your love life (seriously hehe)
(Laughs) well we are both single, as you know women break hearts and heart-breaks give set-backs but we shall fall in love when the right time comes, Uganda has a lot of beautiful women, we shall each of us get ourselves one.
Chano8: Which artistes do you think you sound like?
I think we have a unique sound, is it safe to say we sound like ‘us’?
Chano8: What is your songwriting process?
We have songwriters and we also write for ourselves. For the upcoming projects we may use other writers however, the song ‘Somewhere’ was written by us and other songs by top songwriters.
Chano8: Do you get nervous before performances or during competition?
Yes of course every human does, it’s overwhelming especially when the crowd is big but we are used now.
Chano8: What’s the most ‘rock star’ thing that you’ve ever done?
I can’t recall any but I think whatever we do is a star thing haha
Chano8: If you had to give up music – what would you do to be creative?
I think we could make good actors
Chano8: Strangest venue or gig you’ve ever played?
Manheim and Munich Germany, the venue was full of racists, we were racially abused.
Chano8: Have you had any ‘formal’ music training?
Chano8: How do you balance your music with other obligations say relationships, children, job?
Well we don’t have children, but for other work, we make sure we schedule everything and create time for them, when it’s time for music, we make sure it is strictly music the same with other work
Chano8: Do you have any other projects you would like your fans to know about?
Yes, we have a clothing store called Banina Store at Ntinda Complex.
Chano8: Tell us anything else that you would like people to know about you.
We are down to earth people and ready to conquer the music industry, they should welcome us and support us
Chano8: How often and for how long do you practice?
Chano8: Who are your favorite musicians? Groups?
P Square, they have inspired us throughout our childhood
Chano8: Should a woman ever propose to a man, or pay for dinner on a date?
Yes I think there’s no problem with that provided that it’s not the first date
Chano8: What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?
To follow their dream and praying to God, because through him, everything is possible
