Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years In Prison For Reeva Steenkamp’s Death

Oscar Pistorius loses court case and gets five years for the death of Reeva Steenkamp but could spend as little as ten months behind bars depending on his behavior.

The blade runner wiped the tears from his eyes as he was handed a five year prison after the judge ruled that a non-custodial sentence would send the ‘wrong message to the community’.

Judge Masipa said: “Sentencing is about achieving the right balance. Sentencing is not a perfect exercise.”

And further added that there must be a balance between retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation.

As he was led escorted to the cells, Oscar Pistorius grabbed onto his uncle Arnold and aunt Lois’s hands while Miss Steenkamp’s mother June, smiled as she felt a sense of closure after a seven month trial, but said it ‘would not magic Reeva back.’

With Oscar Pistorius off to prison, his family was left devastated while Reeva is dead and Steenkamp’s remain in grief. There is clearly No ‘winners’ here.

Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term with a maximum being 15 years, and the defense argued for community service and house arrest but the decision was entirely up to Judge Masipa.

Both the prosecution and the defense have the right to appeal against the sentence.
