Pep Guardiola’s Mother Dies Aged 82 After Contracting Coronavirus

It is yet another sad moment for the sporting world as Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, who was 82 years old, dies in Barcelona after contracting coronavirus.

The tragic news was confirmed by the club in a statement to fans and te rest of the world last night. “Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends,” said Manchester City

The disease keeps on ravaging the world and last night’s coronavirus cases of deaths by 637 means 13,055 have died in Spain alone.

It comes at a time when several key figures in the sporting world are joining other well wishers in combating the deadly virus by donating to different task forces across the globe.  Last month, Guardiola himself donated 1m euros (£920,000) to help fight the outbreak.

The money will be used to purchase medical equipment and protective material for staff involved in treating those admitted to hospital.

Barcelona is in Catalonia, which is one of the areas in Spain with the most concentrated number of cases.

The news was greeted by an outpouring of condolences from across football for the Manchester City manager and his family.

The city of Manchester has come together to mourn the departed as rivals United posted on social media to say the club was “saddened to hear this terrible news”, adding: “We send our heartfelt condolences to Pep and his family.”

Spaniard Guardiola, 49, has been in charge of Manchester City since July 2016 after spells as manager of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Guardiola’s former La Liga side Barcelona also sent their condoleneces on Twitter: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dolors Sala during this difficult time, and we would like to express our most heartfelt condolences, especially to Pep Guardiola, his family and his friends.”

Dolors was a former employee of a textile factory close to the family’s home in Santpedor about 40 miles north of Barcelona. She had four children including Pep and Pere, who is a player agent and represents his brother. One of the daughters, Francesca, is a politician who has been Catalonia’s representative to the Nordic countries.
