Prolonged Sitting Will Kill You Even If You Exercise

While a brief period of sitting here and there is natural, long periods of sitting day-in and day-out can seriously impact your health and shorten your life Prolonged sitting increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and more. And make no mistake, you can’t offset 10 hours of stillness with one hour of exercise.

Last year it was scientifically proven in the 47 studies that this sedentary behaviour increases your chances of getting a disease or condition that will kill you even if you exercise. Now a new study from the Netherlands running in the journal Diabetologia suggests that even an extra 40 minutes on your couch reading a news paper of checking you chats or on your office desk will dramatically increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately Modern life is constructed to keep you sited down. When we drive, we sit. When we work at the office, we sit that means if you sit at your office all day at your computer and then your drive or ride home is an hour or if you watch only one TV drama, your risk of type 2 diabetes is pretty significant.

Make walking a habit

Whatever you do get up and move. Your body will thank you if you do. Experts suggest real simple and basic stuff to do to reduce the sedentary time.

  • Make it a goal to get up for a few minutes every hour. Some pedometers will now even send you reminder notes to get up if you get too engrossed in your work.
  • If you do have to sit for your work, switch to a standing desk.
  • If you watch TV at night, don’t zoom ahead during the commercials with your DVR. Instead walks around or at least stand up during the show break.
  • Walk across the hall to talk to a co-worker instead of sending an email.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Park your car further away from the entrance
  • Take a longer, roundabout way to your desk
